What to do
1. Have the children mix flour and
water together in a mixing
bowl, until it reaches the consistency
of thin cake batter.
2. Blow up the balloon and tie the
end.
3. Tie a string around the end of
the balloon and secure it to
something in the room, such as
the crosspiece of the easel.
4. Cover that area of the floor with
a tarp or some newspapers.
5. Let the children pull the strips of newspaper through the flour batter and lay them on the balloon.
6. Encourage them to continue until the entire balloon is covered with two layers of strips.
7. Let the balloon dry for several days.
8. When it is completely dry, set out containers of glue, brushes, and tissue paper squares.
9. Let the children paint glue on the newspaper-covered balloon, and cover it completely with the
colored tissue paper.
10. Make a harness of string around four sides of the balloon.
11. Pierce the balloon inside. Cut a hole with a sharp knife in order to fill the pinata with wrapped
226
candy and small toys.
12. Hang the filled pinata from the ceiling.
13. Let blindfolded children take turns hitting it with a broom handle. It may take an adult to give
it the final whack!
