Instructions

1. Engage the children in a discussion about various professions. Talk about what
police officers, doctors, waiters in restaurants, and bakers do. Explain how
each one of these professions is important to the community.
2. Choose four children and tell them they will be playing a police officer, a
doctor, a waiter, or a baker. Whisper one of the professions to each child.
3. Set out the various items related to each profession, but do not have the
children playing the roles pick them up or put them on.
4. Have the children act out their given roles in some way in front of the rest of
the class.
5. After each child finishes acting out a profession, the rest of the children choose
which items the child acting out that profession would use, and then name the
profession.
6. Continue playing with four new children.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l To extend this activity, ask the children to think of other jobs people in their
neighborhoods do, including dance teacher, florist, book seller, and so on.
Invite the children to look for items that might indicate these professions, and
then act out the jobs, challenging the remaining children to guess the
profession.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children act out aspects of the various professions?
l Can the children associate the correct items with their professions?
