Instructions

1. Yoga is great for children and adults, especially those children who want to
move all the time. Yoga helps children learn body awareness, regulation, and
self-control. And it feels great!
2. You can work yoga into your schedule at many transition points during the
day, or use it as a stand-alone activity.
Author's Note: I always teach my class at the beginning of the year to take
"big, deep breaths." This helps their bodies to calm down and provides more
oxygen to help their brains.
3. At the beginning of circle time, stop to take some relaxing breaths. Before
rest time, do "animal stretches" from a yoga workout. You can also stop
children who are upset, angry, or out of control in the classroom and ask
them to breathe deeply with you, so they can think more clearly.
4. If continued, yoga can be a useful tool in helping children to prepare for tests
or studying, or before public speaking to calm down. There are many yoga
books, card decks with pictures of poses, and videos that can help you
prepare to do a little yoga with your class.
Author's Note: My favorite is the video "Yoga Kids" with Marcia Wenig as the
host by Gaiam Living Arts.
