Materials

Plastic smock for each child Large bowls1/4 cup (60 ml) measuring cups or powdered drink scoops Baking soda

Flour

Oil Colored water

Vinegar Small container for each child

Craft stick for each child

Instructions

1. Put out on the table in large containers as much of the food items as you want the children to use. The larger the amounts the better! Gather the children at the science table, and ask them to put on their smocks.

2. Let the children explore the materials. Encourage them to use their measuring cups or scoops to mix the ingredients in any order, using their craft sticks, in their own containers.

3. You may want older children to tell what the ingredients are, and to predict what will happen.

4. Ask the questions, "What happened? What will happen if you add this?" Encourage them to put some vinegar with the soda to see a big surprise.More to doLanguage: Encourage the children to dictate to you a story about their magic mixture.Math: Ask older children to count how many scoops of each ingredient they used in their own magic mixtures. Write these down to create their very own magic mixture recipe. You can keep these recipes for the next adventure with these ingredients.
