Materials
Red, yellow, and blue fingerpaint
Teaspoon
Fingerpaint paper
Smocks and covered table
Instructions
1. Ask parents to cut out pictures in magazines that contain large areas of a
single color, such as grass, bricks, or background colors. Ask them to place the
pictures in a zipper closure plastic bag so their child can bring them to school.
2. Read A Rainbow of My Own or The Tiny Seed to the children.
3. Help the children draw rainbows on light blue construction paper. Emphasize
that they should draw the arc of the rainbow from one side of the page to the
other.
4. With the children, tear the magazine pictures into many small pieces.
5. Show the children how to fill in each stripe of the rainbow by pasting the torn
paper to it. Use one color for each stripe.
6. If desired, they can paste green or brown paper underneath the rainbow to
make a land formation.
7. Encourage the children to paste cotton balls at each end of the rainbow to
make clouds.
8. Explain to the children that their pictures have texture. Have a short discussion
about texture.
9. Put the leftover paper into the Art Station for the children to explore.
More to do
More Art: Show children the illustrations in Eric Carle's books. Point out that
they made their textured pictures the very same way he makes his pictures.
Science: Bring in a hanging crystal and demonstrate how it makes rainbows.
Sensory: Ask each child to find something in the room that is textured. Ask them
to describe the object: Is it smooth, furry, soft, etc.?
