Materials
1. Place the insect jars on display in a well-defined area. Label each jar with the insect's nameprinted clearly and place the word cards with the insects' names on them close by.2. Ask the children to look at the jars with the magnifying glass. Encourage them to look forspecific things related to each specimen, such as size, body color, number of legs, eyelocation, etc. They can also match the jars to the appropriate word cards.3. The children can then use small pieces of paper to draw the insects, write their insect namesat the bottom and put all of their pages together to make an individual science book.
Instructions
1. Months before you study insects, start collecting real bugs. The insects must be dead for this activity.
2. Pin the bugs down to the Styrofoam board and label them using an insect book to identify them.
3. Put the board on the science table along with magnifying glasses.
4. Encourage the children to look at the bugs and to notice all the similarities and differences among them.More to doArt: Have a variety of art materials available (for example, egg cartons, pipe cleaners, wiggle eyes for older children) and let the children make their own bugs.
