Instructions

* Before the children arrive, crumple up junk mail or other paper and spread it
around the classroom. The messier it looks the better.
What to Do
1. Give the children a few minutes to take in the mess.
2. Ask the children to join you for circle time.
3. Ask them how they think the room looks. You should get lots of comments
about how messy it is.
4. Explain that when people don't put their trash in garbage cans where it
belongs, it makes a big mess.
5. Ask the children to help you clean up the classroom and recycle the paper. Set
out recycling bins into which the children
can put all the paper.
6. Once the mess is gone, ask the
children how they think the
room looks now. Reinforce the
fact that throwing trash on the
ground makes the world look
messy and can be harmful to
the Earth.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Take the children on a walk, and have them pick up real-life litter.
* Ask the children to draw a picture of what the world would look like if
everyone littered.
