Instructions

1. This game can get a bit boisterous so make sure you have lots of room. Also,
you should limit this activity to a maximum of seven participants. Divide a
larger group of children into appropriate-sized groups and either take turns or
make materials for each group.
2. Cut out alphabet letters from poster board.
3. Show the children the letters. Hold up each one and say the letter together.
4. Stack the letters in your hand and throw them up in the air into a large area.
(Tell the children you are going to do this beforehand and remind them to
stay in their places for now). The letters will fall randomly to the floor.
5. After you give them a signal, the children scramble to the letters and pick one
up. Each child will bring a letter to you and identify it. If the child gets it correct,
she keeps the letter. If the child is incorrect, identify the letter for her
and throw it back into the pile. The children then scramble for another letter
and follow the same procedure.
6. Continue until the children have picked up all the letters. At this point, you
can tally totals and pronounce a winner, but it is really not necessary. Most
likely, they will want to play again, so gather the letters and throw them again.
More to do

magazine photos of items beginning with that letter.
More Literacy: Teach the children the ABCs in sign language.
Music: Sing the Alphabet Song. Sing it in many different ways, such as traditional,
