Instructions

1. When you have a few extra moments at group or circle time, try the
following activity.
2. Place a child-sized grocery cart in the middle of the circle.
3. Talk about the different departments in a supermarket, such as frozen foods,
canned goods, produce, bakery, deli, and flowers. You might want to make a
list of all of the different aisles and departments.
4. Start the game with this simple rhyme:
I went to the supermarket and this is what I bought...
5. Give each child a turn to name the item they bought, "shopping" in one
department at a time. Continue as time allows.
More to do Literacy: Focus on the printed word by writing down the names of the items
that they bought in each department.
