Instructions

l Glue individual pictures of the various crops on 3" x 5" cards.
l Write the name of each crop on other 3" x 5" cards.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about growing
and harvesting food. Explain that people
typically plant this produce in the spring
season, that it grows in the summer, and
that the fruits and vegetables get ripe and
ready to pick in the fall, when it is time to harvest them.
2. Show the children pictures of crops and let the children tell you what each
crop is.
3. Place the name of the crop beside its picture. Demonstrate how to harvest
each crop and let the children imitate the motions (shucking corn, picking
apples, carrying heavy pumpkins, and so on).
4. Mix up the picture and word cards. Let the children try to match them up and
show the method of harvesting each crop.
5. This activity can be made progressively more challenging by adding new cards
as the children successfully match the old cards.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Consider visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard during the fall harvest
season.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match words to the pictures?
l Do the children differentiate between the methods of harvesting crops?
