Instructions
1. Cut a 3" circle from the middle of each shoebox lid.
2. Put the lid on the box and secure with two rubber bands.
3. Cut matte board into a variety of shapes a square, rectangle, triangle, circle,
oval, and star. (Matte board can be found at craft stores.) The shapes should
be big enough for a child to hold easily in her hand, and fit through the hole
in the box. Prepare a set of shapes for each box.
4. Before you introduce the game, put one cutout shape in each box.
5. After boisterous outdoor play, transition to something quieter with this
activity. Invite the children to the sandbox and ask each child to put one
hand into the box and touch the item inside. Remind them not to peek or
take the item out.
6. Suggest that they examine the item carefully with their fingers. Tell them to
imagine their fingers have eyes.
7. Instruct the children to remove their hand and leave the item in the box.
8. Tell the children to try to draw the object in the sand with their fingers. Then
they may remove the item and compare it to the sand drawing.
More to do Increase complexity by putting more than one item in the box.
Replace cutout shapes with numbers and letters.
Use blocks, instead of cutouts, to increase awareness of three-dimensional
objects.
