Large sheets of paper
Balls of different sizes and textures Trays of paint SmocksInstructions
What to do
1. Cover a table and the floor with large sheets of paper. Place the balls into trays of paint and
have the children put on their smocks.
2. Invite the children to gently roll a ball across the table to a partner, leaving an impression on
the paper.
3. After they have rolled a ball once or twice, ask the children to move to the next ball and tray.
4. Use the paper as background for a mural or bulletin board; alternatively, cut the paper into
smaller sheets and use it as gift wrapping paper.
More to do
Language: Invite the children to finish the story: "There were two minutes left in the game..."
Math: Make a picture graph of a collection of sports equipment. Play a ballgame and keep a
record of runs or goals scored and similar statistics.
More art: Make a collector's or storage box by covering shoeboxes with sports pictures from
newspapers and magazines; apply a protective coat or sealant over the pictures. Make a puppet
athlete with newspaper and masking tape, then attach strings to its arms and legs so the children
can manipulate it.
