Instructions
Ask every child to bring a warm- or cold-weather clothing item from home.
l Tag every clothing item with the name of the child who brought it in to class.
l Write "Alaska" and "Hawai'i" on cards, and place one card inside each
suitcase.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about how the weather can be very different in
different places. Some climates are warm while others are cold.
2. Show the children the two suitcases. Tell the children they are going to help
pack the suitcases for two different places, one to cold-weather Alaska and
one to warm-weather Hawai'i.
3. Invite the children to take turns picking up an item of clothing, identifying
it by name, saying whether it is for cold or warm weather, and putting it in
the appropriate suitcase. Encourage the children to help one another in the
decision-making process.
4. When the activity is done, challenge the children to count the number of
items in each suitcase.
5. Leave the suitcases and clothing out so the children can explore them further.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Consider extending the activity by having the children sort the clothing items
by color.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify the different clothing items?
l Can the children say whether the clothing is for warm or cool climates?
