Materials

socks or knee-high nylons

beans or corn

chalk, masking tape, or washable paint

Instructions

* Help the children make three beanbags by filling socks or nylons with beans
or corn.
* Draw a circular "bull's eye" target on the ground (with chalk, masking tape, or
washable paint). Start with three concentric circles, making the outside circle
6' across.
* In the middle circle write the number 3. Inside the second circle write the
number 2. Inside the outside circle write the number 1. Mark a "start" line so
the children know where to stand when throwing the beanbags.
What to Do
1. Explain to the children that they will take turns throwing three beanbags into
the target. Explain that the middle circle earns them the most points. Initially,
you will want to help them add up their points.
2. Record the children's points on a chart.
3. As the children become more adept at the game, challenge them to record
their scores on the chart themselves.
4. Consider extending this activity by moving the "start" line farther away from
the target. Or, you may add more circles to the target, maybe starting with five
in the middle.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child toss the beanbag accurately?
* Can each child add?
* Is the child ready to move on to more advanced counting and adding?
