Instructions

The following are some tips for building quality teacher-child relationships.
1. Respect children. Treat children as living, loving individuals, and show them
respect by listening attentively, communicating on their level, and responding
positively.
2. Be accepting. Embrace all children regardless of ethnic, religious, physical,
linguistic, or socioeconomic diversity. Remember that you can accept a child
without necessarily approving of his behavior.
3. Provide warmth. Create an open and inviting classroom atmosphere where
you are welcoming and approachable.
4. Treat children as individuals. Compare children to themselves at an earlier
time rather than comparing children to one another.
5. Provide alternatives. Give children some control over their environment by
allowing them to make choices and contribute to class decisions.
6. Have high expectations. Expect the best from your children and provide
them with many, varied opportunities to be successful.
7. Be honest. Answer children's questions simply but truthfully and offer only
sincere praise.
8. Be a learner. Know your own strengths and weaknesses and be willing to
learn along with, and from, your children.
