food coloring in assorted colors

Instructions

* Send a letter to family members in advance, describing your outdoor activity
and asking them to send their child to school in warm clothing and boots, if
possible.
* Have extra mittens and boots for children who arrive without them.
* Fill each detergent container with water.
* Add enough food coloring to make the water as dark as possible.
What to Do
1. In circle or group time announce that everyone will go outdoors for a special
snow activity.
2. Help the children remember different numbers.
3. Call out numbers and ask the children to write them in the air with their
hands.
4. Help the children dress for the outdoors.
5. Review outdoor behavior, snow safety, and school rules.
6. Once you are outdoors, distribute the containers and demonstrate how to
squeeze the colored water out into the snow.
7. Allow the children to practice manipulating the container and water to make
numbers in the snow.
8. Call out numbers for the children to write in the snow with their containers.
Observe what they are doing. Return to the classroom and get warm!
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Extend the activity to shapes and colors.
