Index cards 5 zipper-closure plastic bags stapler white, green, red, and yellow (fall leaf colors) poster board cut into 8" x 20" pieces scissors string masking tape or clear packaging tape

Instructions

1. For children to do assembly-line book publishing, place step-by-step directions on cards in front of the supplies. Beforehand, read the steps to the children. If desired, include pictures.

2. Each child counts out five baggies.

3. Demonstrate how to staple the baggies together at the top (not the open end).

4. Let each child pick one piece of poster board and fold it in half.

5. Cut pieces of string approximately 24" (you may need to measure to child's height, as they will wear this book as a "pocketbook").

6. Tie the ends of the string together, forming a loop, and place the tied string loop around the folded poster board (see illustration). Tape it to the fold.

7. Add baggies; staple in place (make sure that the string and baggies are stapled).

8. Take the children on a nature walk and collect leaves in the baggies.
