Materials
small laundry basket
several pairs of socks
several colorful shirts (choose shirts with a single color, not stripes or
patterns)
Instructions
Part One (Teacher Preparation)
1. Create dinosaur tags by cutting card stock paper into 5" squares.
2. Glue a dinosaur picture to each square.
3. Punch a hole in the two upper corners of each square and thread heavy
yarn through the holes to create a necklace. Knot the ends of the yarn
to keep it from slipping through the holes.
4. Create at least two of each dinosaur tag. Make sure you make enough
for the entire group that will be playing.
Part Two (Children Play the Game)
1. Hang a Dino-Tag around each child's neck.
Make sure each child knows the name of the
dinosaur on his necklace.
2. Gather the children in a circle and play
instrumental Hokey Pokey music. Sing the song
as follows:
All the dinosaurs get in, (all children move
forward)
All the dinosaurs get out, (all children move
backward)
All the dinosaurs get in, (all children move
forward)
And shake it all about. (all children wiggle and
shake)
Do the dino-pokey (all children raise arms above
head and then down to feet)
And turn yourselves around. (all children turn in
a circle)
That's what it's all about! (all children clap
hands on the beat)
3. On the next chorus, choose a specific dinosaur.
The children wearing those tags perform the
movements while the others clap in time with
the music. On the last three lines, all the
children join in on the fun:
Stegosauri get in, (children with stegosaurus
tags move forward)
Stegosauri get out, (children with stegosaurus
tags move backward)
Stegosauri get in, (children with stegosaurus tags move forward)
And shake it all about. (children with stegosaurus tags wiggle and shake)
Do the dino-pokey (all children raise arms above head and then down to
feet)
And turn yourselves about. (all children turn in a circle)
That's what it's all about! (all children clap hands on the beat)
4. Continue until all of the children have had a chance to participate.
Repeat the first chorus to end the game.
More to do Literacy: Make a book similar to Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr.
Use the same dinosaur pictures as the ones used in the activity. Glue the
pictures to card stock paper. Create a text similar to the Brown Bear text
using the dinosaur names.
