large sheets of paper cut in the shape of kittens or cats

Instructions

l In advance, mark the inside of each egg carton compartment with red, yellow,
or blue.
l Place two red, two blue, and two yellow crayons inside each carton.
What to Do
1. Give each child a prepared egg carton.
2. Together count blue, red, and
yellow crayons and egg holders.
3. Challenge the children to put the
crayons in the matching sections
of the carton.
4. Ask the children to close the
containers (with the crayons
inside) and shake the containers.
Open again, and repeat the
matching challenge.
5. Vary the challenge by having the
children remove all but one
crayon, and try to shake the
crayon into the correct section.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Give the children pieces of red, yellow, and blue construction paper. Can the
children separate the papers into three piles, sorting by color? Can they match
the colored paper with items of like color found in the classroom?
