Instructions

1. Based on the makeup of the group, pick a rule for your "Kid Pattern" (boy/girl, long hair/short hair, pants/dresses, sneakers/sandals, and so on).

2. Tell the children what kind of pattern they will be making, such as boys and girls.

3. Have the children come up one at a time and stand in an ABAB pattern (boy, girl, boy, girl). Use some or all of the children.

4. If there are extra children who don't fit into the pattern, for example, three extra girls, they can be the "pattern callers."5. Have the children "read" the kid pattern: "Boy, girl, boy, girl." If you have callers, they can walk by the children and point or gesture to each child as the pattern is called. If appropriate, introduce the idea of ABAB patterns and have them call out "ABABABAB."6. Have the children sit down and try another pattern rule, such as arms up/arms down, standing/sitting, hair color, or clothing color.

7. When the children have practiced the ABAB pattern, try grouping them into more complex patterns, such as ABCABC or ABBABB.
