several large bags of dry leaves

Instructions

* Make large piles of leaves outdoors for the children to play in.
* Tell the children about how fun it can be to jump in piles of leaves.
What to Do
1. Show the children the piles of leaves.
2. Challenge them to jump in while using the vocabulary words to describe their
jumping, such as high, low, or crouch.
3. Ask the children to count the number of times they can jump on the heap
before it starts to go flat.
4. Ask the children to count how many times they can jump high, low, over, and
under, and encourage the children to bend the different parts of their body
and count the parts they are using.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Be sure the children take turns and wait for one another to leave the heap
before the next child jumps. This is a very exciting activity, but safety has to
come first. Sometimes children will want to go under the leaves. This is fine,
but be sure to supervise the children at all times.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children tell you how many times they landed on the heap of leaves?
* Can the children tell you how many times they jumped high?
