Materials

simple pattern cards showing color or shape patterns2 stepstools

Instructions

1. Place the pattern cards on the floor face down, about 1' apart from each other.

2. Place the two stepstools next to each other in front of the cards.

3. Invite the children to form two single-file lines behind the stepstools.

4. Demonstrate how to play the game. Step on the stepstool, jump off, and pick up a pattern card. Read the pattern aloud (red, blue, red, blue).

5. Turn the card back over and go back into the line.

6. Invite the children to play the game, jumping and naming patterns.More to do Display a second set of pattern cards at a table along with an assortment of manipulative such as blocks, linking cubes, beads, and so on. Encourage children to create or copy patterns at the learning center.
