What to do
1. Give each child a frozen juice can lid.
2. Ask the children to draw a picture on their lid with a permanent marker, working freehand or
using a stencil.
3. Tell the children to place their lid on the workbench or a stack of newspapers or magazines.
4. Wearing safety goggles, have the children position the nail on the line of permanent marker
and hammer the nail, punching a hole through the lid; have them move the nail along the outline
of the drawing, punching holes through the entire design.
5. Punch a larger hole at the top of the lid and thread a piece of yarn through the opening. Hang
the lids in front of a window or on a Christmas tree.
More to do
Field trip: Visit a carpenter or woodworker.
Games: Show the children a set of carpentry tools and name them; cover the display and remove
one of the tools, then ask the children to identify the missing tool. Play a memory card game,
matching tools to their job.
More art: Nail scraps of wood together, creating a sculpture. Design a set of matching cards for a
memory game showing tools and their uses.
