Materials
Yarn or string
Exacto knife, knife, or sharp adult scissors (adult only)
Plastic juice cans
Beads
Wallpaper scraps or tissue paper, optional
Instructions
1. Talk about birds and what they like to eat. Explain that they are going to
make bird feeders.
2. Slice the apples horizontally into 1" thick round disks (adult only). Do not
peel the apples because the red peeling will attract birds. Then use the knife
to poke a hole into each disk (adult only).
3. Give each child an apple disk. Help the children thread a 12" piece of string
through the hole and tie the two ends together in a knot.
4. Encourage the children to spread peanut butter on one side of the disk using
spoons.
5. Next, the children can sprinkle birdseed on the peanut butter.
6. Help the children hang the apple disks from a tree or a shrub so they can
watch the birds enjoy their treat.
7. Observe the birds that come to eat. Use The Audubon Society Field Guide to
North American Birds to identify each bird.
8. Talk about the other foods birds might like to eat and try them out too.
Possibilities include breadcrumbs, sunflower seeds, thistle seeds, fruit, sugar
water for hummingbirds, and worms.
