Instructions

1. Write each child's name on a mailing label. Affix each label to a book pocket,
tape the pockets to the tagboard, and hang in the arrival area.
Note: Using mailing labels on the pockets allows you to rearrange the
names from time to time or to add or delete names as registration changes.
2. Write each child's name on an index card. Let them decorate their name
cards with markers or stickers.
3. When each child arrives, she finds her name card and slips it into the
corresponding name pocket.
4. This short activity provides the children with something to do while you
continue greeting arriving children. The children will quickly recognize the
board as a way to determine who is absent.
5. At the end of the day, let the children remove their name as a departure
activity.
Author's Note: You can also use these pockets to hold small notes to be sent
home, reminders of who has a library book checked out, or other such notes.
More to do Instead of index cards, provide the children with cutout shapes that correspond
with the seasons (such as leaves in the fall or mittens in the winter) or the
weekly activity (such as vehicle shapes during a transportation unit). You can
also give them letters of the alphabet that correspond with their names.
Literacy: As the children's abilities increase, encourage them to write their own
names on the attendance cards, their age, or other ideas.
