Instructions

1. Send a flier to parents asking if they know of anyone who could bring a large
truck to the center on an appointed day. Make sure to clear this activity with
the site supervisor and make sure there is a safe place where the trucks can
park, such as a turn-around driveway. Try to get a vast assortment of trucks,
such as dump truck, logging truck, hydraulic basket truck, utility trucks, humvees
(call the local National Guard), fire truck, and so on.
2. Ask for parent volunteers for this day.
3. At the appointed place and time, take the children outside to see the trucks.
4. Ask the drivers to explain what each of the trucks do. If possible, ask the
drivers to demonstrate what the trucks do.
5. Let the children take turns sitting in, on, and around the trucks.
More to do
Art: Put out precut geometric shapes and encourage the children to glue them
on paper to make trucks.
More Art: Use a die-cut machine to cut outlines of various trucks. Encourage the
children to glue them on paper to make a "Truck Day" collage. Also bring in
magazines with pictures of trucks and help the children cut or tear them out to
add to the collages.
Language: Brainstorm with the children words about the trucks. Write them
down on a large white board or easel. Review them on the following day, adding
more words.
