Materials
Pictures of islands
Blue poster board or matte board
Brown and green modeling clay
Cotton balls
Glue
Construction paper, optional
Instructions
1. Help children cut out 2" (5 cm) circles from brown paper bags.
2. Cut out the center of the circle, leaving a rim about 1/2 " (1 cm) wide. Give
each child two of these.
3. Encourage the child to spread white glue on the rim and place cones into the
glue.
4. Allow it to dry completely.
5. A pair of these rings makes a great gift. (Put candles in the middle of the rim,
if desired.)
More to do
Language: Talk about the concepts of a pair or a circle.
Math: Count the cones in the ring.
Science: Explain that cones are seed holders. (If you have fresh cones, you may
be able to tap them and see seeds fall out.) Tell the children how squirrels and
birds eat the seeds and that some seeds start new trees. Experiment with planting
some of the seeds.
