Materials

Popcorn Corn on the cob

Indian corn Dried feed corn

Wooden bowls Clean, dry rocks

Instructions

1. Display the different forms of corn. Let the children observe, touch and speculate on which type of corn kernel will become which type of familiar food.

2. Allow the children to crush the dried Indian corn kernels in wooden bowls using familiar rocks. Point out that the finished product is cornmeal. Put the cornmeal into an airtight container and save it for baking cornbread at a later time.

3. Try popping popcorn with the children and explain why the popcorn pops. Each kernel contains a drop of water and when that gets hot enough, it explodes.
