10" inner circle of embroidery hoops (1 per child)

variety of small classroom items

Instructions

1. Give each child an
embroidery hoop.
2. Encourage the children to
run their fingers along the
edge. Talk about its features,
including how smooth,
round, or curved it is.
3. Encourage children to say
the word "circle" aloud.
4. Describe how the circle has
an "inside." Set it on the
floor and put objects inside
the circle. Also place objects
outside the circle for
comparison.
5. Invite the children to put objects inside the circle.
6. Examine objects inside the hoops with the children.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children name the shape of the embroidery hoop?
l When given a variety of objects, can the children correctly
