Instructions

* Display 10 toy insects around the classroom.
* Place the container of materials in a select place in the classroom, near the
shirt and hat.
* Display the "Entomologist" word card near the materials.
* Glue several small bugs to a fabric cap and shirt to create an entomologist's
hat and lab coat.
What to Do
1. Write the words "entomology" and "entomologist" on the chalk board. Explain
that entomology is the study of insects and that a person who studies
insects is an "entomologist."
2. Each day, choose a child to be the "Entomologist of the Day."
3. Explain to all the children that there are several insects living in the classroom
and invite them to search around the room for insects.
4. When they find an insect, have the children call the entomologist of the day
over so the entomologist can place the insect in the bug catcher. Help the
entomologist identify the name of the insect on the list of bugs.
5. Model how an entomologist might study each insect: observe it with the
magnifying glass, read about it in the insect handbook.
6. After the children find all 10 insects, go to a table, spill out the bugs, and
challenge the children to name each insect aloud.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand what an "entomologist" is?
* Can the children identify the insects?
