Instructions

1. Show the children images of insects and ask them to count the number of legs
they see.
2. Ask the children how many legs they have, and have them imagine what it
would be like to walk with six legs. That would be a lot of shoes to put on
every morning!
3. Tell the children they will be making a clay insect. Take some clay and roll a
ball about 1 1/2" in diameter. This will be one part of an insect.
4. Roll a smaller quantity of clay between your fingers to form a cylinder about
1" by 1/8 ". This will be one of the insect's six legs.
5. Roll two more legs in this manner and press the three legs against one side of
the larger ball.
6. Form another three legs and press these against the other side of the ball, so
you have an insect with six legs. Count the legs with the children.
7. Separate the children into groups of six and have each child in the group
make her own insect.
8. When the children finish making their insects, ask the children to place them
in a row and count the total number of legs on all the insects in their group.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* How many insect legs can the children count?
* Do the children understand that insects have six legs?
