Instructions
1. Cut different colored pieces of felt into 3" to 4" squares, circles, triangles,
hearts, teddy bears, and other shapes.
2. Start by using shapes in one color. Have the child put a shape on the
flannel board and take it off. Say the name of the color. Let the children
do this for as long as they are interested.
3. For older toddlers who are familiar with different colors, use the same
shape in different colors (a red and blue circle). Say the name of the
color and shape as the child puts the pieces on the flannel board.
4. Once the child knows the names of the colors and the shapes, place a
variety of felt pieces on the floor and ask the child to find a specific
color and shape and place it on the board. For example, "Put the yellow
heart on the board." This works best with the oldest toddlers.
5. Keep in mind that younger toddlers may want to chew or drool on the
felt pieces. The color may "bleed," so do not let the child chew on the
felt.
