Instructions

1. Give the children a newspaper and a set of numbers to look for. (1 to 5 is a good range to start with; 1 to 10 for children familiar with larger numbers.)2. Invite the children to cut out the numbers and glue them in numerical order on a large piece of paper.

3. Call the children's attention to any ways in which the numbers differ. For example, some will be in a bigger font than the others, and some will be in italics or bold type.

4. Ask the children to read the numbers to you. Encourage them to practice counting the numbers.

5. Next, make a counting book using pictures the children cut from the newspaper.

6. Give each child seven pieces of paper. Have them write the page numbers (1 to 5) at the bottom of each of five blank pages.

7. Have the children paste one item on page one, two items on page two, and so forth. Explain that all the things they put on one page must be in some way related, such as all animals, all basketball players, all cars, and so on.

8. Help them print the name of each item on the appropriate page.

9. Have them create a front and back cover for the book using the other two pieces of paper.

10. Punch holes in all the pages (including the front and back covers) and have the children thread the yarn through the holes to bind the pages together into a book.
