I've Been Picking Up the Garbage

Instructions

1. Fold a sheet of 8" x 10" construction paper in half. Place two folded sheets of
paper inside, and staple them together, making a book. Prepare one book for
each child.
2. Consider cutting out some pictures ahead of time for children who may have
difficulty cutting.

1. Gather the children together and talk about homes. Ask the children to
describe their homes, and talk about other kinds of homes they can think of.
2. Read the children a book about different kinds of homes (see Vocabulary list
above). Ask the children if any of them have been to homes in other countries,
or seen homes different from their own. In the Southwest, for example, many
children may have seen Navajo hogans.
3. Set out the materials and invite the children to cut and paste pictures of
homes into their own books. Help them as needed.
4. On the front covers of the children's books, help them write, "Homes Around
the World" by _____, and sign their names.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Can the children name different kinds of homes that people live in?
2. Were the children able to cut out and paste pictures with minimal help?
