Instructions

1. Beforehand, determine the lengths of the blue whale, humpback whale, gray
whale, beluga whale, and killer whale. Go into a long hallway and put down
a line of tape to represent each whale's length. For example, a blue whale is
100', so put down a piece of tape that measures 100'.
2. Then, during circle time when you are talking about whales, tell the children
that they are going to measure how long whales are and how many children
it would take to equal one blue whale, humpback whale, and so on.
3. Bring the children out into the hallway and ask them to lie down on the tape
from head to toe. Once they do that, they will see they don't equal one blue
whale. Then, you will need to go get another class. They will love this!
4. Leave the tape for parents to see.
More to do
Have a "whale day!" Put whales in the sensory table, paint whale shapes at the
easel, read Humphrey the Humpback Whale by Ernest Callenbach, and sing
"Baby Beluga."
