Materials
one piece of 9" x 12" white poster board for each child
black marker
Instructions
1. As part of your closing activity, ask the children, "What went well today?" or
"What was your favorite thing we did today?" Record a consensus response
on the chart paper.
2. Ask a second question, "What could we do better tomorrow?" or "What did
not go well today?" This could be a humorous thing, such as the hamster
escaping from her cage, or a mistake, such as not picking up the blocks
quietly. Record a consensus response on the chart paper.
3. Date the sheet at the bottom. Ask for a volunteer or select a daily illustrator
to draw a picture to go with the two sentences while she is waiting to go
home.
4. Periodically, read the journal with the children. This is an excellent activity
when there isn't anything exciting to report for the day.
Art: Let the children design a fancy cover for the chart by tearing pieces of
aluminum foil and gluing them on the front and back cover. Cut out the letters
for the title ("Reflections") and glue them to the cover.
Books: You could also title the chart "The Daily News" and use pieces of
newsprint for the front and back covers. Type up the funniest pages and make
miniature versions so that each child gets a copy. After discussing how pictures
are used in the regular newspaper, let the children illustrate their own book.
