Instructions

1. Send a piece of construction paper home with each child, along with a request that a parent or guardian trace his or her own hand on the paper and return it to school.

2. Help the child cut out the parent's hand.

3. Ask the child to place her hand inside the adult hand and trace around the child's hand.

4. Discuss how the adult hand and the child hand are alike and different. Discuss how much the child has grown since she was a baby and how much more growing she will do on the way to adulthood.More to doMore science: For the children who have a baby brother or sister at home, send the hand drawing home again and ask the parent to trace the baby's hand inside the child's hand for further size comparison.Snack: Serve each child a snack-size candy bar and a piece of fruit. Explain that some foods are "growing foods" because they provide nutrients the body needs to grow. Other foods, like candy bars, are "fun foods" but must be eaten in moderation because they do not help us grow and stay healthy.
