six or eight different colored baskets or gift bags with handles

classroom objects of various colors

Instructions

Cover coffee cans with white construction paper.
l Write the appropriate color names on the outside of each can and add
various die cuts.
What to Do
1. In advance, introduce the skill of sorting and or classifying.
2. Collect various objects and manipulatives that are the same colors of the cans.
Place all objects in a basket.
3. As children pick out
objects, discuss what the
object is and what color it
is. Children then place
that object in the
appropriate can.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Show the children several items of different colors. Can they name the items,
name their colors, and sort the items by color?
