Instructions

1. Do this activity with a very small group. Begin with an item that weighs one pound, such as a box of pasta, and a lighter weight item, such as a box of gelatin mix.

2. Ask the children to pick up one item in each hand.

3. Ask the children which item is heavier and which one is lighter.

4. One at a time, add other items that have weights in between the first two items. By picking up the items and comparing them, see if the children can put them in order from lightest to heaviest, then from heaviest to lightest.

5. Next, show the children how to weigh the items on a food scale to see if they arranged them in the correct order.

6. Another way for them to check their work is to have them check the weights on the packages. Older children may be able to do this step, but younger children will need your help.
