Materials

Several copies of each child's feet (an actual copy from the copy machine) clear adhesive paper scissors laminator or clear contact paper chart paper

Instructions

1. Take each child to the copy machine. Hold the child up so he can rest his bare feet on the glass. Make sure the child does not stand or press heavily on the glass. You must fully support the child's weight. (If making actual copies is impossible, use construction paper and trace around each child's feet.)2. Make several copies of each child's feet.

3. Clean the copier glass thoroughly.

4. Let the children print their name on the copies of their own feet.

5. Ask the children to cut out the copies of their feet. Laminate the cutouts or cover them with clear contact paper for durability.

6. Use the feet to measure many things in your classroom or school by laying them end-to-end. Ask the children the following questions and let them answer them by using the feet cutouts:* How many feet to the bathroom?* How many feet to the water fountain?* How many feet to the office?* How many feet wide is the classroom?* How many feet long is the classroom?7. Create a chart to show the answers to the questions. Label the chart: "How Many Feet?" Across the bottom, print the words "bathroom," "water fountain," "office," "width," and "length." Draw a small foot in each square to represent each five feet the children measured. Compare the distances on the chart.

8. You can measure many things with your feet if you use your imagination. Have fun!
