Materials

A bucketful of same-size beanbags

A balance scale

Paper with pictures of objects in the room

Instructions

1. You can purchase a balance scale or make one following the picture diagram.

2. Draw and write the following, using objects in the room, so that the children can weigh the objects on their own.

3. Ask the children to put an object on one side of the balance scale and then add enough beanbags to balance the scale. Now count the beanbags and record the numbers.

4. For variation, you could bring in other types of scales for the children to see and use, such as postal scales, food scales, bathroom scales, hanging scales.
