Instructions

1. Let the children experiment with the mesh bag, the eight PVC joints, and the
twelve straight pieces of PVC pipe. Explain that they will use these materials
to make a "bug house" so they can observe a bug in the classroom.
2. Ask the children to arrange the pieces in a square box shape. Let the children
do this themselves it may take a while, but eventually they will figure it out.
This step may take a few days.
3. After the children have arranged the pipes in a square shape, use masking
tape to attach the pieces together.
4. Slide the mesh bag over the PVC pipe box.
5. Use yarn, string, or a rubber band to close and secure the opening of the
bag. Whatever you use, remember you will have to open and close the top
each time you put a bug in the box.
6. Keep the bug box handy, especially when outdoors. If the children find a bug
they want to observe, let them put it in the box.
7. Keep the box in the science area. Encourage the children to observe the bug
and note what is doing. If desired, have the children look up facts about the
bugs they found.
8. After a day of discovery, return the bug to its own environment. The mesh
bag can be removed and washed, if needed.
