Materials
plastic hoops (1 per child)colorful fabric scraps or bandanas (1 per child)
Instructions
1. Disperse the hoops randomly around the playground.
2. Place the fabric scraps randomly near (but not inside) the hoops.
3. Ask each child to stand inside a hoop.
4. When you say, "It's time to count to ____," each child runs and grabs a fabric scrap, raises it high in the air, and waves it around while "whisper counting" to the designated number.
5. When a child finishes the quiet counting, he drops the fabric and runs to a new hoop.
6. Once every child has found a new hoop, continue the game. Play for several minutes.More to do:Movement: Have pairs of children stand inside a hoop together and hold it at waist height. Invite the pair to run from a designated start line to a select place (while inside their hoop together) to pick up a fabric scrap. Once the pair has the fabric in hand, they count in unison to 10 or 20 and then return to the starting line.
