Materials

hula hoops

construction paper

scissors (adult only)

Instructions

l Cut the construction paper into a variety of shapes, so that there is one shape
for every hula hoop.
l Clear a large area in the room. Set the hula hoops on the floor so the children
can get to them and use them safely.
What to Do
1. Place three or more hula hoops on the floor at one end of the room.
2. Place a paper shape on the floor inside each hula hoop but keep the shape
hidden from the children.
3. At the other end of the room, ask the children to sit on the floor, awaiting
instructions.
4. Explain that you will call out a shape name, a type of movement, as well as the
names of one to three children. The children you name get up and run to the
hoop that contains the correct shape, but they must use whatever kind of
movement you name. It may be hopping, crawling, walking sideways or
backwards whatever you decide will be fun and safe for the children.
5. The goal is for the children to reach the hoop containing the specified shape; it
is not a race. Encourage all the children you name to stand together inside the
hula hoop. Change the shapes or the number of hula hoops to keep the
interest high.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Consider doing this activity outside. If you do so, cut the shapes from heavier
material, such as wood scraps, to prevent them from blowing away.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child move to the correct hula hoop?
l Can the child move in the correct motion?
