Instructions

Write the numbers from 1 to 10 on a piece of masking tape. Attach each
number to the bottom of a block.
l Display the assorted blocks in a group (number side down) in the center of
the circle time area, to represent a small city or village of homes.
What To Do
1. Gather 10 children together and talk about different-sized families, and other
living arrangements.
2. Give each child an unnumbered block and invite the children to look at the
small block "homes."
3. Tell the children that a different number of people live in each of the
"homes," and that number is on the bottom of each block.
4. Ask each child to take one "home" and then return to the circle.
5. Tell the children to look at the numbers on the bottoms of their "homes."
6. Ask the children to pick up their unnumbered blocks and separate into groups
of two. Rather than tell their partners how many people live in their homes,
ask the children to tap the blocks together the correct number of times.
7. Help children who are having trouble determining the correct number of
times to tap their blocks together.
8. When the children finish, ask them to return their block homes to their
original locations.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children say how many people live in their homes?
l Can the children identify the numbers on the bottoms of their block homes?
