set of four shapes per child: circle, triangle, square, and rectangle

Instructions

l Cut sets of four shapes per child: circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.
What to Do
1. Teach the children the following song about the shapes:
Have You Seen My Little Square? by Susan Oldham Hill
(Tune: "Do You Know the Muffin Man?")
Oh, have you seen my little square?
It has four corners over there.
And four straight sides, my little square.
Have you seen this shape?
Oh, have you seen my triangle?
It has three straight sides and three
angles.
Count these corners: one, two, three.
Oh, have you seen this shape?
Oh, have you seen my circle shape?
It's round just like a roll of tape.
No corners and no sides at all.
Have you seen this shape?
Oh, have you seen my rectangle?
Four straight sides and four angles.
Count the corners: one, two, three,
four.
Have you seen this shape?
2. Ask the children to hold up the correct shape as they sing each verse.
3. Discuss each shape with the children, and challenge them to count the sides
and corners of each shape.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Show the children the tagboard shapes and ask them to name each one.
l Can the children say the number of corners each shape has?
