Materials
hard-boiled eggs
vinegar
food coloring
paint in different colors
small bowls
small spoons
Instructions
1. Place soap, water, and food coloring or liquid paint into a butter tub. Place it
in a low-sided tub to catch any runoff. Make more than one small tub of
bubbles to provide a choice in colors.
2. Let children use a straw to stir the mixture, and then blow into the mixture to
make bubbles. Let the bubbles flow out over the top edge of the butter tub.
3. Ask them to remove the straw and place it on a paper towel.
4. Demonstrate how to place light-colored paper over the top of the small
butter tub and bubbles. Leave for a few seconds. The bubble shapes will
show through the paper.
5. Lift the paper and look at the bubble design.
6. After the bubble pictures have dried, encourage the children to dictate a few
sentences about their bubbles. Compile all of the papers together to make a
"Bubble Book" for the library.
7. Have the children throw away their straws after they finish the bubble
painting.
8. If desired, let the children use a variety of items to make bubbles, such as
paper or plastic tubes, slotted spoons, colanders, and so on.
Tip: If a child has difficulty blowing into a straw or sucks into it, let her practice
with plain water. Or, an adult can hold the straw in the middle and pinch it
closed after the child blows air into the bubble water each time.
More to do Movement: Encourage the children to form their arms into large round circles
and pretend to be bubbles. Play music as the children dance like bubbles!
Science: Blow bubbles and catch them on a sheet of paper. Encourage the
children to measure the size of the bubbles using a ruler or another item of
measurement.
