What to do
1. Ahead of time, on yellow construction paper, trace the outline of two small shoes, then cut
them out and set aside two of the shapes for each child.
2. Show the children how to cut the paper plates in half using a zigzag motion so that they
resemble broken eggshells. Set the eggshells aside for later.
3. Hand two of the yellow paper shapes to each child. Explain that the first shape will be the head
162
and body of the chick.
4. From the construction paper, have the children cut or tear small shapes to represent the beak
and eyes of their chick. Let them glue the shapes onto both sides of the head of their chick.
5. Show the children how to cut the second shape in half across its width for the wings. Invite the
children to glue pieces of feather onto the wings, then attach a wing to each side of the chick's
body.
6. Have the children attach two clothespins for the chick's legs, then mold playdough into feet or
a base to help the chick stand on its own.
7. When they finish their chick, have the children tear paper bags into strips for a nest, place the
eggshell in the nest, then prop the chick between the two pieces of eggshell.
More to do
Math: Draw a counting line and place it on the table or floor; invite the children to place a chick in
each square along the line, counting off as they do so.
More art: Paint a barnyard scene on mural paper. Make a chick from two pieces of felt, then fill
with stuffing.
