Instructions
Preparation
l Make a stop sign with the red paper, marker, and tongue depressor.
l Create a pretend crosswalk using the masking tape.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about the crossing guard or other person in your
neighborhood who keeps children safe while crossing the street.
2. Invite the children to share what they know about crossing the street safely.
3. Display the clothing a crossing guard might wear.
4. Allow different children to try on the vest or belt.
5. Demonstrate how to play the role of a crossing guard as you display the sign to
stop traffic, then motion for the children to cross safely between the lines of the
"crosswalk."
6. Allow small groups of children to work with the materials and role play the crossing
guard who safely shuttles children from one side of the street to the other.

Crossing Guard by Mary J. Murray
(Tune: "Three Blind Mice")
Crossing guard,
Crossing guard,
We need you.
We need you.
You help us to safely cross the street,
You help us to safely cross the street,
You help us to safely cross the street,
We thank you.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do children work together and take turns?
l Do the children understand the importance of following a crossing
guard's instructions?
