Instructions

1. With the children, make road signs using construction paper and markers or
tempera paint.
2. Laminate the signs or cover them with clear contact paper for durability.
3. Glue or tape the signs to craft sticks.
4. Help the children roll clay into several balls with flattened bottoms. Then,
place the bottoms of the craft sticks into the clay balls.
5. Allow the clay to dry, until hardened.
6. Separate the soft Velcro pieces from the rough pieces.
7. Using the rough-sided Velcro, place a strip onto the carpet to form a road. If
desired, cut the Velcro to make shorter roads or curves in the road.
8. Place toy cars, people, and signs on the carpet for roadway fun!
More to do
Dramatic Play: Make a bus, train, or airplane using a refrigerator box. Place the
box on its side. Using a knife, cut out several windows along the sides of the box
and a driver's windshield in front. Cut out the bottom of the box for exit and
entrance purposes. If desired, ask the children to paint the box. Place chairs
inside for children to sit on during their travels.
More Dramatic Play: Create a travel center in the Dramatic Play Area. Put old
tickets from previous travels, suitcases, old charge cards, play money, old uniforms
(train conductor, pilot, and so on), hats, trays, pretend food, cups, magazines,
pillows, and blankets. Display promotional posters of airlines, train stations,
and other travel-related destinations or methods of travel.
Field Trips: Take a walk with the children and look at the types of signs along the
road. When you return to the classroom, make road signs and display them
around the room.
Social Studies: Invite a transportation worker to visit the classroom or take a tour
of an airplane, taxi, bus, or train. Take plenty of photos for future reference.
